Opening and saving files
This section contains frequently asked questions about opening and saving files.
Opening Microsoft Excel files |
When opening a Microsoft Excel file in Quattro Pro, are most Microsoft Excel features supported?
Problem
Microsoft Excel and Quattro Pro have similarities, but, because Microsoft Excel is a proprietary file format, it’s sometimes difficult to precisely convert all aspects of a Microsoft Excel file to Quattro Pro. It’s also difficult, and sometimes impossible, to convert features found in Microsoft Excel, such as Shrink to Fit, that are not available in Quattro Pro.
Solution
In general, you’ll find that most basic spreadsheets are successfully converted with minimal inconsistencies.
Spreadsheets that contain more complex information, such as macro pages, chart files (.xlc), templates (.xlt), add-ins (.xla, .xll), or toolbars (.xlb), however, are not converted from Microsoft Excel. Other conversion exceptions include the following:
•
|
|
some charts (which cannot be distinguished by Quattro Pro)
|
•
|
|
functions or formulas that Quattro Pro cannot interpret
|
•
|
|
some incompatibilities in determining cell properties
|

Opening Microsoft Excel files in Microsoft Excel mode |
When I open a Microsoft Excel file, why doesn’t it open in Microsoft Excel mode?
Answer
When you open a Microsoft Excel file in Quattro Pro, it opens in the workspace you have selected. Regardless of the type of file you open, the workspace mode specified in the Workspace manager displays. For example, if you have selected Quattro Pro mode in the Workspace manager, the Microsoft Excel file will open in Quattro Pro mode.
If you want to open Microsoft Excel files in Microsoft Excel mode, you must first select the Microsoft Excel option in the Workspace manager.

Renaming filename extensions | p" border="0" height="10" width="10"> |
I changed a Microsoft Excel file’s .xls filename extension to .qpw to open it in Quattro Pro. But when I try to open the file, Quattro Pro gives me an error message that the file format is invalid. Why?
Problem
When you change only the filename extension, you aren’t changing the file format or converting the content to Quattro Pro. That’s why you can’t open the Microsoft Excel file in Quattro Pro.
Solution
To open a Microsoft Excel file in Quattro Pro, you must open the Microsoft Excel (.xls) file in Quattro Pro and specify that it’s a Microsoft Excel file. The opening process converts the file to the Quattro Pro format. Once the file is open in Quattro Pro, you can save the file as a Quattro Pro or Microsoft Excel file.
