Working with fonts in PDF files

You can embed fonts in a PDF file, including base 14 Postscript fonts. Embedding fonts increases the file size, but it makes a PDF file more portable because the fonts do not need to reside on other computers. When you embed base 14 Postscript fonts, the fonts are added to your computer, thus eliminating font variations on different computers. The base 14 PostScript fonts reside on all PostScript devices.

You can also convert TrueType fonts to Type 1 fonts, which may increase the size of the file if it contains many fonts. When you convert fonts, you can reduce file size by subsetting Type 1 fonts. Subsetting allows you to include only the characters that are being used in the file (for example, English characters A through E).

You can also eliminate font variations on different computers by exporting text as curves. This method may be useful if your file contains unusual text characters. Because this method does not use fonts, it eliminates the problem of font variations; however, it increases the complexity of the file and may increase file size. For the publication of most documents, it is recommended that you embed fonts rather than convert text to curves.

If you create a subset of Type 1 fonts, you should not use Adobe Acrobat to edit or correct the PDF file, because the characters you add when editing can’t be saved in the file.
